The federal government initiated the food stamp program many years ago to help people who do not have the ability to buy food for themselves due to their low income. The food stamp program or SNAP has helped millions of people over the years.

The food stamp program has changed much from the old days. Now the government will give you an account and deposit money into it each month. You would then use a debit like card to pay for your food.

In order to apply for food stamps, you have to meet the eligibility requirements. First, you must be a U.S. citizen. The other requirement is that your income must be below a certain amount. Not everyone will get the same amount of food stamps either. The amount you get depends on how much below the upper limit of the income bar you are at.

To get an idea of whether or not you qualify based on income, you can go online and look for food stamp calculators. These calculators will take your income and other expenses and give you an estimate of how much you would get in food stamps.

You can apply for food stamps online. This is the easiest option. There are several websites that will help you fill out the application and then submit to the food stamp office.

The other option is to apply for food stamps in person. This requires you to go to the food stamp office and fill out the application. You also have to show that you are eligible by giving them your pay stubs and expenses that you have. If you are not up to going down to their office, you could of course fax or mail in the application.

Some evidence that you need to bring to the food stamp office would be your mortgage payment statements, child support payments, medical bills, etc. The more you bring, the more likely some of these expenses can be used to calculate how much food stamp you get.

There are certain items that you cannot buy with food stamps. These include alcohol, tobacco, or food from restaurants. You are also not allowed to buy non food items.

After you send off your application, you can expect to wait at least a month before you back as to whether or not you are eligible and the amount of money you will get for food stamps.
